IMPLEMENTING SELECTIVE COLLECTION OF ORGANIC WASTE IN RESTAURANTS, CANTEENS AND MARKETS- A CASE STUDY FROM THE COMMUNICATION STRATEGY POINT OF VIEW
In 2005, Valorsul, the company responsible for the treatment and recovery of Municipal Solid Waste in Lisbon’s 4 municipalities, launched a pioneer project in Portugal – selective collection of Biodegradable Waste in restaurants, hotels, supplying and retailer markets. To support this project a Communication Strategy was carefully planed. This paper will present the company background, will briefly explain the Biodegradable Waste Processing Plant and detail the communication strategy: the communication objectives, the targets, initial data collection results. Finally, it will detail the stages of the Communication Plan: Data collection, Implementation, Start-up and Consolidation. (Session A6: Waste collection)
Valorsul, S.A. is the company responsible for the treatment of the approximately 750 thousand tons of Municipal Solid Waste produced, per year, in great Lisbon. This paper will present a case study of the communication strategy, implementation and evaluation of a new Selective Collection of Organic Waste in restaurants, canteens and markets in 4 Portuguese municipalities, launched in 2005. Valorsul implemented this communication strategy with different entities, representing also a good example of partnership between the private and public sector, working together and sharing know-how to achieve the same goals.

Improving Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management services in developing regions of the world is one the major challenges of sustainable urban development. As part of its commitment to help these regions in this effort, the World Bank commissioned a study in 2006 to review and rationalize the current state of municipal solid waste management in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) regions, and to recommend actions leading to improvements and greater private sector participation/investment.

Die Abfallgebühren für einen durchschnittlichen 4-Personen-Haushalt wurden auf Basis der aktuellen Gebührensatzungen ermittelt. In Bayern wurden dabei erstmals die Abfallgebühren aller öffentlich-rechtlichen Entsorgungsträger aus 86 Landkreisen und kreisfreien Städten erfasst.

In einer bayernweiten Recherche wurden die aktuellen Gebühren für die kommunale Abfallentsorgung auf Basis der im Internet verfügbaren Gebührensatzungen der öffentlich- rechtlichen Entsorgungsträger ermittelt.

In einer bayernweiten Umfrage, durchgeführt vom Zweckverband Abfallwirtschaft Donau-Wald, wurden die Gebühren von 71 der 96 entsorgungspflichtigen Körperschaften in Bayern ermittelt und ausgewertet. Die Studie wird ergänzt um Kostenvergleiche aus dem Forum für kommunale Zusammenarbeit (ForumZ) sowie um ausgewählte Kosten und Leistungsstandards in den bundesdeutschen Ländern und dem europäischen Ausland.
