Study on the factors influencing municipal solids waste generation in China by multiple statistical analysis

The factors influencing municipal solids waste generation in China is present in this study by multiple statistical analysis. The 12 items was chosen to investigated, including GDP, per capita GDP, urban population, the proportion of urban population, the area of constructed urban, the area of paved roads, the area of urban gardens and green areas, the number of the big cities, annual per capita disposable income of residents, per capita annual consumption expenditure, total energy consumption and annual per capital consumption for households.

Three new dimensions to be found by principal components analysis (PCA).Component 1-Economy and urban development; Component 2-Population; and Component 3–Energy consumption; the three components together account for 97.8% of the initial variance (KMO=0.736; Bartlett’s test P-value=0.000; Cronbach’s alpha coefficient ranging from 0.68 to 0.76). The results show that economy and urban development items are important factors influencing MSW generation, but the relationship between gross domestic product (GDP) growth and production of MSW was not as clear-cut as assumed in China. For the first time, the energy consumption is considered as a main approach to influencing the MSW generation. The annual MSW quantity variation was also investigated by cluster analysis.

Solid-waste generation differs from region to region since it depends on many socioeconomic and other factors. Quantity and composition of generated waste are essential in order to plan a municipal solid waste management strategy. Therefore it is necessary to estimate solid-waste generation for a given region as well as its correlation with the socioeconomic factors. Household’s size is under investigation in the present paper, in order examine whether there is an effect on solid-waste generation.
