RAPID SCREENING PROCEDURE TO OPTIMISE THE ANAEROBIC CODIGESTION OF INDUSTRIAL BIOWASTES AND AGRICULTURE LIVESTOCK WASTES IN CYPRUS

Cyprus acceded to the European Union in 2002 and since then is required to implement the environmental legislation enforced in the Union, to bring the country in line with other Member States. Waste management is a particularly problematic area, which has received relatively little attention in the past in Cyprus, and the treatment and management of livestock and industrial wastes are a specific, major problem in the country.

Small-scale experimental investigations were undertaken on the digestion and codigestion of livestock waste and industrial biowastes. A novel procedure was developed to rapidly determine the suitability of wastes for digestion. During the initial acclimatisation phase, the seed (digested brewery waste) was replaced by the test waste before allowing the tests to incubate without further addition, where methanogenesis was measured. Dairy cattle slurry was the most efficient co-substrate which, when codigested with pig slurry in equal ratio achieved volatile solids destruction of 32 %, CH4 production rate of 97.4 ml d-1, maximum CH4 content of 61.6 % and total gas yield of 2229 ml after 529 hours. High fat content wastes were unsuitable for anaerobic digestion (AD) due to low pH value and because the dominant microbial reaction was fermentation. Codigestion was investigated to overcome any inhibitions, however, cattle slurry, abattoir wastewater and NaOH additions did not lead to methanogenesis. Treating these wastes by AD is feasible but without CH4 production.

Bei der stofflichen Verwertung von Bioabfall, bzw. der Produktion von Kompost entstehen im Rahmen der Aufbereitung und der Konfektionierung Siebreste. Nach überschlägiger Schätzung liegt der Anteil bei jährlich ca. 800.000 bis 1.000.000 Mg.

Organic waste management in Europe is currently undergoing intense transformations: the recent European legislation encourages prevention, recycling and recovery of materials and energy from waste by alternative technologies. As a consequence, a large amount of biodegradable waste is expected to be diverted from landfills to other organic waste management practices, such as land application for restoration: in fact, even if in many countries legislation now requires that the original surface soils are conserved and replaced, there is a vast heritage of degraded land requiring restoration (recontour, topsoil replacement, vegetative cover), to be achieved as cheaply and as effective as possible.
