A regional and source-oriented approach of organic waste management - A feasibility study for composting on Bonaire, C/N
This study investigated the feasibility of turning organic waste from food ‘FW’, vegetation ‘VW’, and sludge ‘SS’ into compost suitable for soil improvement purposes under the prevailing conditions on Bonaire. The research consisted of waste flow inventories, organic substrate characterizations, composting experiments, soil investigations, and the assessment of consequential environmental and financial impacts.
Bonaire is a small
Caribbean island state and characterized by tourism. The total waste amounts to
about 25,000 tFM/a, whereof ca. 18 % are landfilled solid organic wastes from
businesses, households, and public spaces. Moreover, the local wastewater treatment
plant(s) are expected to produce approx. 300 tDM/a sewage sludge which is rich
in N and P.
For this purpose,
different mixing ratios of the waste types were characterized and processed
under comparable conditions. The generated products were characterized and
included in nine composting scenarios in order to assess the economical and
financial suitability.
Results indicate
that the composting of pure vegetation waste is not suitable. However, the
mixtures of food waste and sewage sludge is limited to: a) 0 – 40 %DM FW and/or
SS for processing; b) < 5 %DM SS for product quality (heavy metals); and c)
0 – 15 %DM FW and/or 0 – 20 %DM SS regarding finances. Thus, solid organic
waste and sewage sludge can appropriately be reused and are additionally
improving Bonaire’s soil conditions.

Die Abfallgebühren für einen durchschnittlichen 4-Personen-Haushalt wurden auf Basis der aktuellen Gebührensatzungen ermittelt. In Bayern wurden dabei erstmals die Abfallgebühren aller öffentlich-rechtlichen Entsorgungsträger aus 86 Landkreisen und kreisfreien Städten erfasst.
