The calculation issue for the lower heating value
This article intends to show the difficulties in understanding and using different lower heating values, as applied to two plastic wastes from a sorting plant in Portugal.
The formulae involved were based on standards, governmental guidelines, internet pages, university and research centre reports, and scientific papers and books on the combustion process. The results obtained show that the formulae gave approximate values for both materials, but the variation value (i.e. amplitude), according to each formulae, is around 1 MJ/kg. With regard to the possible publication of a European Committee for Standardization (CEN) standard for the certification of solid recovered fuels (SRF), more effort and research should be put into guaranteeing more accurate results, facilitating SRF classification and providing an easier, more explicit and less expensive way of determining a fuel's lower heating value.
