Rapid and efficient removal of boron from deep sea water using synthesized polymer resin

The present investigation aims to treat the deep sea water using the polymeric resins synthesized in the laboratory. The resin was characterized with IR analysis and the morphology was discussed with SEM images. Further, the resin was distributed in three different bead sizes i.e., 0.25 mm, 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm as to assess their removal efficiency for the boron.

The removal behavior of this resin was examined under the batch and column experiments keeping identical conditions. The batch and column data obtained for the boron removal was critically compared to the commercially available resin. Further, reusability of this resin was also obtained taking the repeated operations using the same used resin. These results may enable to reduce the input cost of deep sea water treatment.

Sorption kinetics of PAH by using various sorbents
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
Polycyclic aromatic hyrocarbons (PAH), which are a large group of organic compounds with two or more fused rings, are an important threat to the environment. They occur in the aquatic environment as the result of oil spills, ship traffic, pyrolytic processes, domestic and industrial wastewater discharges.

The impact of mining activities in the quality of coastal sea waters
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
The quality of coastal sea waters downstream of a major mixed sulphide mining and milling industrial facility located in North-Aegean Sea of Greece was examined. The factors influencing the quality of coastal waters are the natural mineralization, the remains of past mining activities, the washout phenomena following precipitation events and the discharge of the treated mine waters.

An integrated modeling procedure for thermal discharges into coastal waters
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
An integrated modeling procedure is presented for the calculation of the hydrodynamics and the excess temperature of coastal waters, during the discharge of cooling waters from power stations. The procedure, which consists of five steps, involves the use of two models.
