Predicting the biochemical methane potential of organic waste by near infrared spectroscopy© European Compost Network ECN e.V. (6/2012)
The biochemical methane potential (BMP) evaluates the ultimate amount of methane produced by any given waste orbiomass under anaerobic conditions. This value is currently one of the most important parameter for the design andcontrol of anaerobic digestion plants and more specifically in co-digestion plants where a broad rang of substrates canbe treated.

Local assessment of toxicity for municipal solid waste through life cycle assessment and usetox© European Compost Network ECN e.V. (6/2012)
This research takes part in a PhD work aiming to develop an assessment methodology for local environmental impacts of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management in order to provide elements of choice to local decision-makers. MSW management is a local issue managed under the responsibility of French local authorities. These local authorities are currently threatened by a shortage risk of treatment facilities for MSW. This shortage is the result of overall treatment capacity reduction of existing facilities and, concomitantly the result of the low number of new facilities.

Hazardous waste classification and re-use (end of waste) by New Waste Directive, CLP and REACH Regulations© Wasteconsult International (6/2010)
Hazardous waste’ means waste which displays one or more of the hazardous properties H. Attribution of the hazardous properties H is derived from risk phrases R coming from Directives 67/548/EEC and 1999/45/EC. New CLP Regulation (repealing above Directives) in place of risk phrases R introduces hazard statements H. That means, that soon we will derive hazardous properties H (1 or 2-digit) from hazard statements H (3-digit) of it’s components.
Waste Producers' Duty of Care under European Community Law© Wasteconsult International (6/2010)
In a little-noticed case in 2008, the European Court of Justice held that waste producers have a duty to take reasonable precautions to assure proper disposal of their waste under the Waste Framework Directive. The Court, in effect, invalidated the laws of 15 Member States that purport to allow transfer of liability to third-party waste vendors. The same “polluter pays” language as to waste producers was re-enacted in the revised Directive and should be reflected in the latest transposition of the Directive in 2010 to meet the Court's ruling on what is mandatory community law.
Urban composting in South Africa – sustainability aspects© European Compost Network ECN e.V. (9/2006)
SUMMARY:
It is valuable to have other projects to learn from when initiating new composting projects. Some municipal initiatives in composting of solid waste in South Africa were studied, and based on these seven case studies, we aimed to evaluate how composting fulfils the goals of the municipalities. The goals were technological process function, environmental impact, economic sustainability and social policy fulfilment.
Strategies for the Implementation of the EU Landfill Directive in Different Member States© Arbeitsgemeinschaft Stoffspezifische Abfallbehandlung ASA e.V. (2/2006)
A comprehensive evaluation of the status and application of the EU Landfill Directive on bio-degradable municipal solid waste BMW management and the reduction of these materials being landfilled is currently ongoing at EU level on behalf of the Commission. From the case-studies surveyed below we can summarize that separate collection schemes for biodegrad-able packaging (i.e. paper and cardboard) and of food- and garden waste is already well established in Central Europe and rapidly growing in different countries (Italy, Spain, U.K.).
Preface 6. International ASA Waste Days© Arbeitsgemeinschaft Stoffspezifische Abfallbehandlung ASA e.V. (2/2006)
