The construction of industrial and transport infrastructure, such as electricity power stations, large manufacturing installations, metallurgical industries, incinerator plants, cement factories, highways, and airports, should be preceded by environmental impact assessments to ensure that damage to the areas affected is kept to a minimum. These investigations should continue after commissioning to ensure that operations are conducted to established standards, thus adopting the pre-cautionary principle for protection of the environment. Environmental impact assessments EIA are usually all-embracing and should take into consideration all components, such as air, water, soil and biota, although effort may be concentrated on only one or two of these in specific studies.

The well-organised landfill as an approved end solution for solid wastes is based on a life cycle philosophy and the argument that this is what best fits the intentions of the Waste Hierarchy, which promotes waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting. From an historical point of view, wastes which remain as leftovers in nature, have been regarded as a resource. The fact that waste has turned out to be a problem is the result of a change in the focus of modern economies from the management of resources to the management of money. Solutions promoting the efficient use of resources are rejected to the advantage of alternatives with high short-term profitability. The result is an increasing amount of waste, which indicates that the economy in question is ineffective and wasteful with its resources.

The landfill for the east side of the Thessaloniki metropolitan area is located at Tagarades’community limits, at a distance of 30 km from the center of the serviced area. The landfill site covers 300,000 m2 and operates continuously since September 1981. This site will continue to
accept wastes until 2007 when the new landfill site located at MAVRORAHI II, 38 km northwest of Thessaloniki, is expected to start operation. The Tagarades landfill serves a total population of 1,000,000 people.

Chemically modified gelatin films were prepared using various crosslinking agents, i.e., formaldehyde, butadiene diepoxide and hexamethylene diisocyanate. They were evaluated for their biodegradability by exposing them to sewage, which was inoculated with periphyton taken from the bottom and walls of municipal sewage systems.
