The importance of forests in regulating the global climate, particularly as a store and sink of carbon, is widely recognised. Forest protection as a climate mitigation measure has been acknowledged at the international level, and has been an important element of UNFCCC discussions since its inclusion in the Bali Action Plan at the 13th Conference of the Parties in Bali, Indonesia in 2007 (COP 13).3 The REDD debate has developed into its current form, REDD plus,4 which also includes sustainable forest management, conservation and enhancement of carbon stocks in the suite of actions that may be eligible for international funding.

Spa Tourism in the trans-border region of Drama-Kavala-Xanthi-Blagoevgrad-Smolyan: Prospects for common development

The aim of this research paper is to investigate the level of spa tourism and prospects for developing this industry in the trans-border region of Drama-Kavala-Xanthi-Blagoevgrad-Smolyan. To start with, the development of this form of tourism is examined within the theoretical framework of sustainable tourism development. Then, the basic aspects of spa tourism are investigated, approaching its concept and impact, before going on to record mineral springs in the region under study and their main features. Finally, the possibility of common development of spa tourism (Greece-Bulgaria) in the region is examined, while specific proposals are presented to achieve this goal.

Problem structuring is taken to be an important early stage in helping groups address messy problems. Groups are asked initially to develop at least some common understanding of the situation by undertaking some modeling of the group members’ knowledge on this situation - as a preface to negotiating a direction forward.

Aim of the present analysis is to show how the attitude towards hunting management depends on hunting-related values. 237 standardized questionnaires have been distributed to hunters of Northern Hellas (Macedonia and Thrace) and the data were processed through Pearson test after normality test. Contrary to the hunters who regard hunting merely as a “sport”, these who regard it as a “life way” support long-term, more “eco-centric” and sustainable solutions like habitat improvement and predator control (and not, for example, release of quarries).

Towards optimal environmental management, a research project that aims at the development of a “framework of indicators for the environment and sustainability of the Greater Thessaloniki Area” has been implemented by the Aristotle University Thessaloniki in collaboration with the Organisation for the Master Plan and Environmental Protection of Thessaloniki. This framework of indicators aims to support the needs of local authorities towards both assessing the state of the environment in the Greater Thessaloniki Area (GTA), as well as comparing against other areas in Greece or internationally.
