Lysimeter field study of a clay geosynthetic barrier in a landfill cover system© LGA Bautechnik GmbH (2/2004)
Clay geosynthetic barriers, also known as geosynthetic clay liners (GCL), are often used as elements of landfill cover systems instead of compacted clay liners which are favoured by the technical regulations of the EC and of Germany. As a contribution to the verification of the performance of GCL in landfill applications a lysimeter field study was conducted on a landfill in Bavaria.
Acetic acid. a tool to assess anaerobic processes© European Compost Network ECN e.V. (5/2003)
Acetic acid is one of the central intermediates in anaerobic digestion proceses, and its accumulation mostly indicates a dysfunction of this process. Although acetic acid gives an immediate signal of the physiological status of the anaerobic treatment process, routinely biogas production and pH are usually used as indicators of anaerobic processes because they are easier to measure than acetic acid.
Composting of local organic by-products for use as a soil amendment in quarry reclamation in Greece© European Compost Network ECN e.V. (5/2003)
The feasibility of producing compost for soil amendment in quarry reclamation projects, from locally available organic materiasl in the island of Milos and in Fokis, was investigated. Different mixes, adjusted according to material availability and required compost quality, were composted in lab-scale reactors of 40 l capacity (Colombus Instruments), with continuous monitoring of T, airflow, and O2 consumption and CO2 production as measures of microbial activity.
Use of compost in vegetable production© European Compost Network ECN e.V. (5/2003)
A three-year project to improve the competitiveness and long-term sustainability of Australian vegetable production by developing production systems based on the use of a greenwaste based compost, commenced in mid 2000.
