Hazardous waste management in Chile: novel challenges for a new regulation© Lehrstuhl für Abfallverwertungstechnik und Abfallwirtschaft der Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2006)
The new "Hazardous Waste Management Regulation" was published in the Official Newspaper of the Chilean Republic on June 12th, 2003, being in force 365 days after its publication (i.e. June 12th, 2004).
Energy from biomass© OTH Amberg-Weiden (8/2005)
In principle biomass is organically stored solar energy. The storage occurs through photosynthesis in plants and via the plants in animals as well. According to this definition, coal, oil and gas may also be considered as biomass; after all they originate from dead plant and animal residue. As we understand it today, biomass also has a temporal dimension. It is decisive for our climate that the growth process of biomass - while it is converting carbon, mostly from the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air, into organic matter - closely coincides with the release, e.g. by energetic utilization. This period can last several hundred years for trees and only a few weeks for other plants.
Recovery and Recycling Paths of Biodegradable Polymer Packaging - Case Study Kassel City -© Bauhaus-Universität Weimar - Professur für Abfallwirtschaft (4/2005)
As a result of intensive sponsorship and both scientific and commercial research efforts, biologically degradable polymers (BDP) have been developed in the last few years to be ready for practical utilisation. The application of BDP for packaging purposes was considered to be the most practical area for their use.
Characterization of alternative fuels© Thomé-Kozmiensky Verlag GmbH (3/2005)
Utilization of alternative fuels in the power generating industry, in the cement industry and in the steel making industry has recently gained a considerable importance.
Progress in Geochemical Hazardous Waste Detection© Lehrstuhl für Abfallverwertungstechnik und Abfallwirtschaft der Montanuniversität Leoben (9/2004)
The "TSEEP" technology described in this article was designed to detect and map underground pollution cost effectively and rapidly.
Agricultural reuse of wastewater and sewage sludge© Universität Braunschweig - Institut für Siedlungswasserwirtschaft (10/2003)
Continued population growth, contamination of both surface water and groundwater, uneven distribution of water resources and periodic droughts have lead to a search for new sources of water supply. One must discuss, not only in developing and threshold countries, how the objectives and requirements for wastewater and sludge disposal are in accord with a possible water reuse or whether they exclude each other. Early developments in the field of water reuse are synonymous with the historical practice of land application for the disposal of wastewater.
