Mechanical-biological Treatment of Waste in Austria: Current Developments

The current development in the field of the mechanical-biological treatment of municipal and industrial wastes in Austria is a clear indication of the rising importance of this form of waste treatment. In the beginning of the year 2007, 17 mechanical-biological treatment plants were in operation with a treatment capacity of approximately 686,500 tons. method to thermal treatment.

Due to the implementation of the Austrian landfill ordinance – since the 1st of January 2004 only pretreated waste can be landfilled – the amount of waste fuels has strongly increased.
