10 years anniversary celebration in China: Constant Waterlevel Sequencing Batch Reactor (CWSBR)

CWSBR “Constant Waterlevel Sequencing Batch Reactor” is an innovative biological treatment technology for municipal wastewater. The application of the CWSBR technology started in 2000 in order to lower the costs of wastewater treatment plants significantly. After an intensive period of quality assurance by the patent holder “Gesellschaft für Abwasser- und Abfalltechnik mbH” (G.A.A) in Germany the international acceptance of CWSBR increased rapidly. In China the sole authorized technology holder and promotion representative, Dalian MEC Environmental Technology & Engineering Co., Ltd. (Dalian MECETC) realized the successful implementation of CWSBR in the market and achieved high social and economic benefits.

A newly developed process to clean industrial wastewaters reduces input of the environment and health damaging industrial chemical perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS) by more than 87 per cent. This is the result of a pilot project carried out by Hansgrohe AG in Schiltach, Germany.

The expansion of the Beijing Capital International Airport made it necessary to open up new sources for the water supply to the new facilities. The decision for reuse of effluent water from a municipal wastewater plant was mainly based on two reasons. The major reason is to save scarce groundwater. In addition, the idea of providing water using an innovative and economically friendly water re-use plant was strongly supported by the fact that the expansion of the Beijing Capital Airport coincided with the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

To “Save money“ is the order of the day – especially due to permanently rising energy expenditure. This is of course also applicable for the cost balance of wastewater treatment plants the yearly cost of which may compose at 55 % from capital and at 45 % from operational costs. These operational costs will consist of payroll costs (45 %), material (10 %), services of other companies (8 %) and various others (5 %). This means that almost a fi fth of the operational costs of a wastewater treatment plant are used for energy. Considerably more than half of them – approx. 60 % – are required for the blower station for biological cleaning. But not only energy costs, also payroll costs and costs for services of other companies highly depend on the chosen compressed air supply.
