Energy Efficiency in Wastewater Treatment Systems
© Vulkan-Verlag GmbH (9/2009)
To “Save money“ is the order of the day – especially due to permanently rising energy expenditure. This is of course also applicable for the cost balance of wastewater treatment plants the yearly cost of which may compose at 55 % from capital and at 45 % from operational costs. These operational costs will consist of payroll costs (45 %), material (10 %), services of other companies (8 %) and various others (5 %). This means that almost a fi fth of the operational costs of a wastewater treatment plant are used for energy. Considerably more than half of them – approx. 60 % – are required for the blower station for biological cleaning. But not only energy costs, also payroll costs and costs for services of other companies highly depend on the chosen compressed air supply.

Treatment of ammonia-polluted groundwater in North Bohemian brown coal mining region
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
A feasibility study was completed to assess the applicability of two groundwater treatment technologies at the site, where a brown coal processing plant released 4000 tons of ammonia into the subsurface. The present groundwater ammonia concentration (approx. 100 ppm) was required to be reduced to 0.5 ppm to satisfy the Czech groundwater remediation directives.

Biosorption of zinc from industrial wastewater using bacteria resistance
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
In this study in order to determine and investigate the effect of zinc concentration on bacteria resistance threshold, two samples of industrial wastewater(1 and 2) were collected. The concentrations of zinc in samples were 36 and 17 gL-1. In order to access heterotrophic plate count, wastewater samples were cultured on nutrient agar by pour plate method and to count and isolate the Zn resistant bacteria, samples were cultured by spread plate method on PHG-II agar include of 0.5 mML-1 of Zn in three dilution and two replications.
