In Germany, about 133 million Euro are spent annually for New Year’s Eve fireworks, which result in 38,000 to 49,000 Mg of total firework mass. By a com-bination of desk research with official fireworks approval statistics, a customer survey, dismantling experiments with fireworks debris and with packaging characterisation, the total nationwide polymer emission was estimated to be 3,088 Mg. Out of this total mass, a projected polymer debris mass of 534 Mg was identified, and about 270 Mg of polymer packaging material. The remaining 2283 Mg of polymer mass are parts that eventually may remain at the launching site.

Landfill mining views landfills with the aim of regaining secondary resources from deposited landfill material. In this respect, landfi ll owners are faced with the decision of whether to leave their landfills in aftercare, for example, or start a landfill mining project. In order to be able to make this decision, the landfi ll owners must have the right aid in decision making.

Recovery and recycling of metals from residues is important for protecting our natural resources. Therefore we identified approaches for the utilization of residues of the German steel industry to improve resource efficiency. The study focuses on the residues blast furnace sludge, basic oxygen
furnace dust/sludge and electric arc furnace (EAF) dust. The objective of the study was to find further, more efficient connections between process chains.
Decoding interdependencies between primary and secondary raw material markets by means of the Capacity Model© Wasteconsult International (5/2011)
On the basis of the well-known life-cycle-concept the Capacity Model presents an explanation approach for the interdependencies between primary and secondary raw material markets alongside the life-cycle of different waste materials. Depending on site capacity and waste amount the price for a certain waste material is either determined by the disposal market or the energy and raw material market.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT in Pfinztal-Berghausen near Karlsruhe (Southern Germany) has developed and tested a process to prepare mixed PET (polyethylene terephthalate) from sorted packaging waste for mechanical recycling. The material can be used for injection moulded parts in technical applications.

The global financial crisis has also reached the German recycling industry. But as opposed to the banking and automotive industries, the recycling industry has not responded with panic or predictions of Armageddon. Admittedly, there are some problems with exporting wastepaper to China, but in Germany the industry sees more opportunities than risks. In any case, there will be some form of market adjustment. An important representative of the German disposal industry and an expert in the area of wastepaper expresses his views on the situation in the global market.
