Vegetable oil extraction of petroleum hydrocarbons from soil and subsequent separation via non-woven fabrics

The current combination, though, of using microemulsions of plant oil in water to extract mineral hydrocarbons in-situ from the soil and to separate that contaminated oil phase from water via non-wovens is novel and in preliminary experiments was shown be to very promising in terms of costs and performance.

The aim of this research work was to investigate the influence of spruce bark natural bioactive compounds on copper bioaccumulation in rape plant.

Simulation modeling of the fate of nitrogen in the constructed wetland of Carla in Greece
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
Constructed wetlands are complex dynamic ecosystems. Ecosystem-level odeling of the processes that take place in a constructed wetland is a useful tool for understanding wetland function and structure and for making predictions.

Tracing sediment sources in Amrovan Drainage basin, Iran
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
Soil erosion is one of the most important environmental problems in the world including Iran. For decreasing the impacts of soil erosion, soil conservation measures are required. For successful soil conservation measures, obtaining information about the relative importance of sediment source and their shares in sediment production is required. There are different methods for determining the relative importance of sediment sources, among which tracing or source studies are emphasized in recent years due to their privileges.

Extraction of coal residues from hard coal mining waste dumps as a chance of minimization of their adverse environmental impact
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
Re-mining of existing dumping sites for extraction of coal residues (around 10% wt.) with subsequent reuse of a secondary waste in engineering constructions or its re-disposal in the environmentally safe way is an attractive and economically viable way of coal protection as a valuable natural resource and adequate reduction of dumped waste volume, along with reduction of adverse environmental impact of coal mining waste dumps.

Application of computer modelling for forecasting of contaminants distribution in soil
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
An outlook of various methods of computer modeling application for the analysis and forecasting of contaminants migration in the soil is being discussed. A new mathematical model of contaminants transport in near-surface soil layer under non-isothermal conditions is being proposed. The given model takes into account the soil moisture content change effecting the solute transport and sorption owing to evaporation processes and recondensation of water vapor. The article also covers the possibility of hybrid expert systems (HES) application for solving contaminants migration in the soil. Distinguish structure of HES that includes models hybridization is being proposed. On the basis of given methods and models a new software has been developed.

Comparison of the effect of heavy metals on the pedofauna of forest and meadow stands
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
In order to examine the soil contamination by heavy metals and to estimate its influence on the pedofauna, two forest stands and two meadow stands (located in the vicinity of woody areas) have been chosen. The content of Cd, Ni, Pb, Cu, and Zn in the soil of the stands was investigated using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Some environmental parameters were also analyzed, such as temperature, humidity and soil pH. The soil samples were neutral or slightly alkaline. The content of all heavy metals was smaller in the soil of the forest park. Cd and Pb content in the meadow and forest soil of the protected landscape park was high. It was found that in the forest park the density of pedofauna was higher than in the meadow and forest of the protected landscape park.

Torrefied grass fibres as a substitute for peat in potting soil
© European Compost Network ECN e.V. (10/2008)
Since the late 1970s, there has been a worldwide search for new peat substitutes. Natural grass fibres may substitute peat and be applied as a new ingredient of potting soils.

Safety and agronomic efficiency of compost application on vineyard with respect to its organic micropollutants content
© European Compost Network ECN e.V. (10/2008)
The objective of this study was to determine the fate of NPE, LAS, PAH, PCB, PCDD/F and PAE after compost application at the lab- and field-scale in a vineyard agronomic context of low organic matter Mediterranean soil.
